“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”. – Phil. 2:12

This verse of scripture has been very often quoted, but most of the time wrongly quoted.. A very pivotal question would be, was Apostle Paul actually preaching fear or we have just simply misquoted and misunderstood what his message?

Good bible Study should help us arrive at what the Apostle Paul really meant

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Paul here is writing to his son Timothy who actually does know the scripture [2 Tim. 3:15] on the importance of complete, accurate and precise bible study so as to get a succinct interpretation and also be able to accurately teach it.

This therefore would be a very good example for any student/teacher to follow in bible study/interpretation. We must be diligent as laborers, precisely cutting through scriptures so as to arrive at the truth unbiased, not innovating things, but excavating what is already evidently explained in the written word, allowing scripture interpret scripture.

Pst. Olusegun Onayinka [Saints Community Church] said and i quote “a verse of scripture can never mean what it never meant when it was written” I find this succinct. This is a golden rule in bible study/interpretation.

Now to Phil 2:12-13

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Two very important principles/laws of bible study would be applied to understand this verse

First, the Law of Double or more mentions/Corroborative Evidences and in between we would also apply Secondly, the Law of Contextual Analysis

This would mean we have look at other places of scripture where we find the same phrase “fear and trembling” understand it’s use in context, then we can arrive at something to hold on to

1 Cor. 2:1-3 (KJV)

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Application of contextual analysis obviously reveals Paul wasn’t teaching fear here, since nothing before and after verses 3 indicated fear

Let’s see more

2 Cor. 7:14-16 (KJV)

14 For if I have boasted anything to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.

15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

Eph. 6:4-6 (KJV)

4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

Notice generally that these verses of scripture had no notion of fear or shivering. Instead you can notably point out sincerity, singleness of heart and humility.

Back to Phil. 2:12-13

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure

Pay attention to the details and notice the statement WORK OUT, and of course you have to observe verse 13 too, “For it is God who WORKETH IN YOU”.

Firstly, keep in mind that the verse (Phil. 2:1-13) doesn’t in anyway teach getting God to accept you by your deeds, but instead it teaches conduct between men

Let’s see in context

1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

What was the mind in Christ Jesus?

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Can you clearly see humility, singleness of heart, unity and love well discussed both in Phil. 2 and all other verses we looked into?

Secondly, context shows that God is our ability

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure

Getting a grip of this will rescue you, in other words it’s safe to say that understanding verse 13 will destroy any wrong notion of performance for God’s accreditation in verse 12.

Philemon 6 (AMP)

6 I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective and powerful because of your accurate knowledge of every good thing which is ours in Christ.

we continue still..

Hope this blessed you?
